The maternity protection period normally lasts six weeks before the expected birth and eight weeks after it; longer periods apply in some cases. Maternity protection also includes rights beyond these periods. An employed parent can take up to three years of parental leave per child, including up to 24 months between the third and eighth birthdays. Normally, notice is due seven weeks before leave starting before age three, or thirteen weeks for leave between ages three and eight. For children born or adopted from 1 May 2025, notice may be in text form, including email; earlier cases require signed written notice.
